Okay, usually everyone wants to push all of their furniture against the walls. It's almost as if they want this large area in the middle of their room in case they want to bust out "just dance". Cozy is the key. Furniture works out better when it is brought together. If you have an open floor plan or a loft, you have no choice but to be creative when creating your seating area. The key is to have the right pieces and an area rug!!
Sometimes it helps to have a drawing or to see an aerial view. Many websites like Pottery Barn and other online furniture stores offer these free room planning sites to help you plan out your furniture.
These have been a tremendous help to me when I am staging or buying new furniture for a client. I want to make sure that if we are buying furniture-it fits!
Area rugs are so important. Without them, it just seems like something is missing. I love the pairing of chairs with a loveseat or sofa. You do not need to buy a sofa and loveseat. And please, please do not buy the entire furniture set from the store! Buy only pieces you like, you don't want your room to look like you just boxed it up from the furniture store and brought it home.
Lastly, if you want a softer look in your seating area, go for an upholstered ottoman that can be used as a coffee table. I can go on all day about seating areas. Remember be unique, choose your pieces wisely, and use an area rug!!
